Biography of Carl Kunst (1884-1912) |

Carl Kunst was a German artist who worked in painting, graphic design and poster arts; the latter of which he is most famous for. He belonged to the art movement known as the Munich School, led by Ludwig Hohlwein. The stylistic qualities that defined the Munich School were flat use of color and shape, a sense of photo-realism, and precision drawing. It is easy to see the influence of Hohlwein's work in Kunst's posters. Both artists share the use of high contrast in a network of shapes to define their images.
Kunst, besides being an artist, was also a passionate mountaineer. This is probably one of the main factors that led him to make the posters Bilgeri-Ski-Ausrstung and Bazar Nrnberg. Both are ski equipment advertisements and show peaceful mountain scenery as a beautiful backdrop for the skis and poles. |
