Biography of Theo Van Rysselberghe (1862-1926)

Belgian painter, engraver, illustrator, designer and sculptor

Theo van Rysselberghe is one of the most important figures in the field of Neo-impressionism. He introduced the Pointillist technique of Seurat and Signac to Belgium and was a key figure in the group of avant-garde Brussels artists known as "Les XX" (Les Vingt). An indefatigable traveler with insatiable curiosity, he would feel the pull of distant lands for his entire life. After a year in Morocco, he visited Constantinople (Istanbul) and roamed Europe making repeated trips to his homeland.Born in Ghent in 1862, he studied art at the Academies in Ghent and Brussels, and in 1881 exhibited for the first time at the Salon in Brussels. His early works reflected the Belgian realistic tradition but his interest soon shifted to Impressionism. His first contact with Neo-Impressionism at the 1886 impressionist exhibition in Paris was a turning point in his career. In the late 1890s, van Rysselberghe's style peaked and his use of dots became increasingly less orthodox. After 1910 his brush strokes lengthened and took on the Impressionist style of brushwork and broadened his methods of artistic expression. . Theo van Rysselberghe died in 1926 in St. Clair.
