George de Feure was born George Van Sluiters to a Dutch family living in Paris. His artistic endeavors began with watercolor and impressionism but were greatly influenced by the renowned poster artist Jules Cheret. De Feure worked in furniture and stage design before moving into posters. Among his design feats was the decoration of Chat Noir, a famous pub in Montmarte (suburb of Paris).
In the 1890s, De Feure began to focus on poster production. His posters reflect influences from Parisian artists as well as Art Nouveau, and Orientalist themes. Despite the popularity of his posters, he continued with poster art for only a few years until he returned to theatrical design. |
