Born and raised in Zurich, Switzerland, Eugene Grasset studied architecture at L'Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne before moving to Paris, where he devoted his energies to art. His early days in France were spent experimenting in the ceramic arts, furniture design and metal works before turning to a career in lithography. In 1877, Grasset focused on the illustrative arts by designing books, calendars and magazine covers, which soon developed into the production of lithographic posters. Initially, Grasset had a classical eye but soon became a devoted student and teacher of the Art Nouveau style, by which he is recognized today. |
