Biography of Burkhard Mangold (1873-1950)

Mangold was born and lived in Basel, Switzerland. He wore many hats throughout his career as an artist. He was a painter, glass etcher and poster artist. He studied in Paris and Munich and under Hans Sandreuter and was clearly influenced by the contemporary German style bringing a spirit of modernism to his posters.

Mangold contributed greatly to the inception of graphic arts in Switzerland around the turn of the century. Today he is considered an important Swiss artist who helped to inspire and create the Swiss poster.
