America's first women soldiers who served on the front lines as telephone operators celebrated the end of WWI along with their male peers in the US Army Signal Corps. Upon returning home, the 223 women who served became known as the Hello Girls and were summarily denied veteran status. Not until 1977, six decades later, when President Jimmy Carter signed the order did the few surviving Hello Girls receive full veteran status
