Bernard's Villemot's intensely colored poster promotes air travel to New Caledonia in the private French airline's new fleet of DC6's. TAI or Transport Aeriens Intercontinentaux acquired this route from Air France along with their route to Australia.
In this 1958 original poster, Villemot's painterly approach to poster art and simplification of forms is apparent. He takes us to a quiet lagoon inhabited by the native Kanaks, their traditional huts flanked by Cook pines and coconut palms. This tranquil scene becomes riveting by Villemot's his innovative use of color, the strong cobalt blue lagoon surrounded by the fiery red sky and sand and framed by deep hunter green of the trees. This is great example of Villemot's work and evidence of why he is considered one of the last great poster artists.
