Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942)
Original color lithographic poster, printed by Vercasson, Paris, France 1907. Condition: Near Mint (A) , backed on linen.
Sheet size: 47.5 H. X 31.5 W.
Printed in 1907, Cognac Pellisson is a good example of how Cappiello's posters were beginning to transform from his early, pre-1905 work into his trademark designs. Here we see Cappiello experimenting with solid black backgrounds which exuberantly push the highly saturated colors into the viewers eye. He then combines these elements with an image which both surprises and delights and leaves an indelible impression.

This poster was printed in two sizes, this being the smaller. It's one of the few times that I actually prefer the smaller version. When the poster is hung on the wall, I think it looks better when the schoolboy's face is close to eye-level if not higher. From this vantage point, it clearly highlights the unexpected incongruity of the over-sized cognac barrel.
