Adolphe Mouron Cassandre (1901-1968) Statendam Original lithographic poster printed in colors, printed by Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Rotterdam, Holland 1928. Condition: Fine (B+) slight tears and cracks primarily limited to border, backed on linen and framed. Sheet size: 30.75 H. X 40.25 W. Frame size: 46.25 H. X 36.75 W. $21000 As one of the great and innovative poster artists of the 20th century, Cassandre's Statendam is an iconic image and exemplifies the characteristics of the art deco period. The poster is an advertisement for luxury transport using enlarged, simplified imagery of the ventilation cowl on a steam cruiser. Cassandre's artistic focus is on communication through visual language. He employs this successfully by constructing a compelling composition and marrying his custom typeface into the design. Statendam highlights strength with the towering feeling of the ships' smoke stacks and speed through the undulating movement of the lines rapidly receding into the background. Cassandre further highlights the composition by using the Holland-America corporate color scheme to bring the focus to the foreground.
