Jules Cheret (1836-1932)
Lithograph in colors, printed by Chaix, Paris, France 1896. Condition: Fine (B+) light folds, some minor edge damage, fresh colors, backed on linen.
Sheet size: 48 H. X 33 W.
In this playful poster promoting toys for the 1897 New Year season at Louvre, one of Paris's largest department stores, we see Cheret's magical use of the classical figures from the Commedia dell'Arte. Cheret has masterfully silhouetted Harlequin in the background, featured Clown and Columbine romping about effectively taking center stage, and below, a smiling Pierrot engaging the viewing audience. A delightful composition full of color and motion, certainly one of Cheret's best works among the many posters he created for various stores.
