Loie Fuller, perhaps the original American in Paris, was the perfect foil for Cheret's dynamic style. With her dance of fire, she ignited the audiences at the Folies-Bergere as Cheret's posters lit up the streets of Paris.

Born Mary Louise Fuller in 1862 in Illinois, she studied singing, dancing and acting. Her first stage performance was with a Chicago based stock company. She developed a specialty dance in which she draped herself in yards of diaphanous fabric that reacted with the colored stage lights to dazzle and delight her audiences. She debuted her new act on the New York stage in 1892 and later that year, went on to at the Folies Bergere where she became an immediate sensation and one of the most celebrated expatriates of her era.
