The early American theater poster was used to entice the public to come out and see live performances and performers in their local theaters. These posters did not generally identify the artist but were produced by some of the best printers of the time and this poster is no exception, produced by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati. Strobridge is one of America's most important printers known for both their designs and craftsmanship. This poster, a beautifully rendered portrait of Viola Allen successfully brings Allen to life. It was published in 1909 for Libeler and Company, a major production company that produced both Broadway and travelling shows.

Viola Allen was a prominent actress who played leading roles in many original plays and starred in over two dozen Broadway productions between1885 to 1916. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Viola made her first stage appearance at the age of 15 at Madison Square Theater in New York in Esmeralda. She is best remembered for her roles in Shenandoah and Little Lord Fauntleroy.

This poster is also special for its large size, measuring a full 83 inches tall by 40 inches, printed on two sheets. This size is considerably more rare than the more common one-sheet poster (41 x 27 inches).
