What better way for Georges Dola to announce the 1936 French production of Franz Lehar's The Merry Widow than to see Hanna (the merry widow) and Count Danilo in classic waltz pose, joyously whirling across the stage. First performed in 1905, The Merry Widow is one of the most successful and long lasting of the great Viennese operettas. A comedy of love, memorable music, elegant settings, and likeable characters, it is estimated that in its first 60 years, it was performed about half a million times. It continues to enjoy international success and is frequently revived and recorded.
