Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939)
Lithograph printed in colors, printed by F. Champenois, Paris, France 1897. Condition: Very Good (B) restored losses primarily at edges but does extend into image area; fresh, natural colors, backed on linen and framed.
Sheet size: 58.25 H. X 37.5 W.
In this original 1897 poster for Bieres de la Meuse, Alphonse Mucha captures a contemplative figure, her stein brimming with foam. The Art Nouveau elements are unmistakable. The alluring woman's long flowing tresses showcase a wreath featuring brilliant red poppies, golden sheaths of wheat, and fresh green hops, all the makings for an unforgettable beer. The poster's elegance and lightness creates an image of a noble beer.

At the bottom of the poster are two vignettes by another artist. Pictured is the goddess of the river Meuse and below, a bird's eye view of the brewery in Bar-le-Duc. At this time, la Meuse was one of the largest remaining breweries in the area that enjoyed a rich history as a brewing center.

Perhaps the most beautiful poster ever created for a beer, demonstrating, once again, the remarkable style of Alphonse Mucha.
