This is an original poster by Alphonse Mucha for the twentieth exhibition of the Salon des Cent. It is from the rare deluxe edition without the text at the bottom, printed on vellum, and hand signed and numbered by the artist in the lower right. It is believed that the edition size was 50 though no print run was ever specified.
This poster represents the start of a long and important collaboration between Mucha and La Plume, the influential literary and art magazine founded by Leon Deschamps. The Salon des Cent was the magazine's exhibition hall located in the Latin Quarter on the Rue Bonaparte. Their popular monthly shows attracted the Parisian elite and were significant in the development of the fin de sicle poster.
Deschamps beautiful and often cited description of the poster bears repeating. "A half-nude woman, her inclined head resting nonchalantly on one hand, her golden hair curling like a halo in rich arabesques... a divine languor lingering over the clean outlines of her face, the whole emanating an indefinable charm." Mucha's 1896 design continues to captivate the eye and delight the senses.
